I did not arrive at this question from a research report or a passing interest in Europe. I arrived at it from a childhood that never stayed in one place for very long.
I was born in Hawaii. My family later moved to Lake Tahoe, and from there to Malta, where we spent the next three years — a small, particular island in the Mediterranean unlike anywhere else I've lived since. From Malta, we moved to Lisbon, where I spent three more formative years — old enough, by then, to actually understand what I was experiencing, not just absorb it.
Eventually, I came back to the U.S. and landed at Belmont University in Nashville, where Second Shore is based today. I have returned to Europe at various points since, for work and otherwise.
None of that makes me a lawyer, a tax advisor, or an immigration specialist — and I am careful never to pretend otherwise. What it does give me is something most people in this space don't have: I know, from the inside, what it actually means to build a life across more than one place. Not the postcard version. The real one.
Lisbon changed how I think about cost, too. People talk about Portugal's affordability, and it's real — but the more interesting part is what a lower cost of living actually does to a person. When you're not spending most of your income just to maintain a life, something shifts. You slow down. You think differently. You have more of yourself left at the end of the day.
That is the conversation I kept having with American families who had built real careers and real wealth, and were quietly wondering if there was another way to live — not a cheaper life, a different one.
